The changes are listed below:
CDBA Audition Procedures 2020-21
Audition Fee:
Once you have submitted your students, you need to send the audition fee ($8 per audition + $10 school fee) to the appropriate chair. If your registration fee is not postmarked by January 20, 2021 and received by to February 1, 2021, your students will be disqualified. We did not change the fee due to the possibility of the clinic, paying our audition chairs and other expenses we incur throughout the year, such as our annual assessment.
Make checks to: CDBA
School Check, Booster Check, Director’s Personal Check, Cashier Check or Money Order accepted.

Percussion Auditions:
The percussion auditions will remain the same. We will still have auditions on mallets, snare and timpani. We did not change the audition requirements, as we will have to send 2 mallet students, 4 general percussion (snare), and 1 timpani student to all state auditions.
Video Examples:
We will be providing video examples of what each audition should look like. These will be uploaded to the CDBA website by December 5th.

- Submissions for all district auditions will be between January 5-15, 2021. This has been pushed back one month.
- Our clinic chairs will sort and distribute auditions between January 16-31, 2021.
- Judging auditions will take place between February 1-15, 2021. See attached document for more information.
- Results will be posted on February 18, 2021.
- The clinic will be postponed from it’s original January date. Please see the information below concerning the clinic.
- We will forego the “Must attend the district clinic to participate in all state auditions” for 2021. Factors for removing this requirement, is the postponement of the clinic and with no rescheduled date set, it may be past the reporting date for all state auditions when the clinic is held.
- Directors must obtain video consent forms from their students to audition. (Student Video Audition Release Form) You will need to keep this form on file for 3 years and will also have to attest to receiving video consent when you submit your student’s audition. If you determine to get electronic signatures for this form, you must include the wording from the form, do not adapt it in any way.

- Percussion Audition Requirements
- Due to the nature of percussion instruments, both the student and the playing surface must be visible at all times in the submitted recording
- Snare: It is acceptable to use either a drum or a practice pad for auditions. If using a drum, the playing surface of the head should be visible. If using a pad, the entire practice pad should be seen. The judges must be able to clearly see the sticks striking the playing surface during the student’s performance. The student should only perform the snare solo, they are not required to do the auxiliary portion. This video example is an exact example of how to set up your recording device for a snare drum (Snare Drum Audition Example - special thanks to Josh Cvijanovic). Please set up the recording device so that the instrument and your hands can be clearly seen throughout the recording. At the beginning of the recording, state your name, grade and instrument, then begin playing. Once you have finished, please stop the recording. Do not say anything additional in the recording.
- Timpani: similar to snare, the heads of all drums used for the recording must be visible on the recording, and the judges must be able to see the mallets striking the heads during the performance. This video example is an exact example of how to set up your recording device for the timpani (Timpani Audition Example - special thanks to Josh Cvijanovic). Please set up the recording device so that the instrument and your hands can be clearly seen throughout the recording. At the beginning of the recording, state your name, grade and instrument, then begin playing. Once you have finished, please stop the recording. Do not say anything additional in the recording.
- Mallets: Any bars struck during the course of the performance must be visible to the judges. It is not necessary to see any resonators/frame/etc. The judges must be able to see the mallets as the student is using them, and see them strike the bars. This video example is an exact example of how to set up your recording device for a mallet instrument (Mallet Audition Example - special thanks to Josh Cvijanovic). Please set up the device at the end of the mallet instrument so that the instrument and your hands can be clearly seen throughout the recording. At the beginning of the recording, step into the frame, state your name, grade and instrument, then begin playing. Once you have finished, please stop the recording. Do not say anything additional in the recording.
- Any percussion submission that does not follow the guidelines listed above will be disqualified from the audition and will not receive a score
- Due to the nature of percussion instruments, both the student and the playing surface must be visible at all times in the submitted recording
